FTL vs LTL: What Makes Them Different?

There are two main transport concepts we hear about the most: FTL and LTL.  These differ primarily due to the quantity of goods being shipped and the services provided.  The purpose of this article is to explain what each one entails in order to provide clarity for your transportation needs.

FTL

Full Truckload (FTL) is ideal for larger and more time-sensitive shipments (typically over 15,000 pounds or 10 pallets).  It is the preferred option when there is a substantial volume of items to be shipped, including fragile ones, and the cargo fills a significant portion of the truck’s capacity.

FTL freight services tend to travel directly from the origin to the destination with minimal handling.  This results in faster transit times than LTL, lower risks of shipments being damaged or lost, and more predictable transit times.  With reduced risks of damage and more efficient travel times, this method is suitable for large businesses or those with heavier freight needs.  It is also ideal for shipments that require more strict time guidelines.

In general, FTL is more expensive than its smaller counterparts, as it is faster and handles larger quantities.  For businesses with large volumes of items, this can be the more economical option.

LTL

Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) involves shipping a smaller volume of items that don’t require a full truck.  The volume typically ranges between 150 and 15,000 pounds (but this can vary).  This means the same truck can share its space among other shipments.  For this reason, LTL freight services are usually the more affordable option.  Those with smaller loads that don’t require a truck’s entire capacity only pay for the portion of the truck that their goods occupy.

However, due to the need for multiple stops, the handling of the items increases, which also raises the risk of damage, loss, or delays.  This may also increase the amount of time needed for the shipments to reach their destination when compared to FTL.  This is why LTL is more suitable for smaller businesses that may allow for more flexible delivery times and lower freight volume.

How To Know When To Use FTL vs LTL

Both FTL and LTL come with advantages, which may make choosing between the two a bit confusing.  When considering FTL vs LTL shipping, it’s important to consider the value of the goods and their fragility.

FTL is often preferred for high-value or fragile items due to reduced handling.  And, if delivery time is critical, FTL is often the better option.  If the delivery requires refrigerated freight services, FTL is also generally the preferred option as it can transport large quantities of perishable goods requiring strict temperature control.

However, refrigerated freight transportation service is available for both FTL and LTL deliveries through Nishan Transport.  Thus, ensuring uninterrupted cooled air supply regardless of your other needs.  The chart below offers a summary of the above information to help assess which option may be more applicable to your needs.

With this being said, one may be wondering which is best for specific distances.  For example, cross-country transport.  In this case, neither FTL nor LTL is better than the other.  The ideal option will change on a case-by-case basis, depending on the needs of the shipment.  (Size, weight, budget, time constraints, etc.)

While the above chart may help you visualize your needs, we recommend speaking to a professional.  They know which solution is best for each unique need while also having the above factors in mind.
